Three Kinds Of
music for baroque clarinet in D

(ca. 10 Min.; comp. & FP: 2002)

dedicated to Bernhard Kösling,
on the suggestion of Martin McWilliam

Introduction


This piece consists of three movements. The first movement is an uninterrupted, accelerating canon, which ends with a small Mozart reference. The second movements plays with a large number of different sound types, for which definite movement forms are designated. Each of these motifs has its own center within the structure of this movement, so that the dense sonorities continuously shift. Lastly, the third movement, labelled with the instruction "without time and tempo", uses seven very gentle tones, which are then transformed into a single sound through multiphonics, leaving nothing else. The clarinettist moves around throughout the entire duration of the piece, so that the various timbral qualities of a particular hall play an important rôle.

In the second movement two texts by Franz Kafka are incorporated. They read:

„The true path follows a rope, which is not stretched across the heavens, but is instead quite near to the earth. It appears most definitely to induce stumbles, in order to walk along it.“

„Three kinds of:
looking at oneself as something strange, forgetting the glance, retaining that image.
Or only two kinds, because the third engulfs the second.“
